Therapeutic Benefits Research
In 2009, Livewire undertook a research project into the therapeutic benefits of Livewire's online community for young people living with a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability.
The final findings of Livewire's therapeutic benefits research will contribute to the existing body of research regarding social networking sites and young people. Of particular interest is the impact that social networking sites such as Livewire may have on the health and well-being of young people who have a chronic health condition, serious illness or disability.
In undertaking this research Livewire was particularly interested in exploring and identifying ways in which Livewire makes a positive impact on the quality of life, social support, self-esteem and/or personal empowerment of its members.
Murdoch University Research
A research study conducted by Murdoch University has found that
the Livewire online community powerfully supports the personal and social wellbeing of its members. The findings challenge the existing literature around how young Australians use online technology.
Dr Amanda Third and Dr Ingrid Richardson from
Murdoch University's Centre for Everyday Life (CEL) undertook the study to uncover how Livewire members use the Livewire online community and how their participation affected their sense of wellbeing, as well as their sense of identity and embodiment.
The nine month research project analysed qualitative data captured using online surveys, online focus group discussions, website content analysis and one-on-one face-to-face interviews with a selection of Livewire members.
The research found that Livewire's unique combination of moderated chat, safety, and entertainment has created a reliable point of social connection for young people aged 10-21 that often lack opportunities to socially interact with others their age due to a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability. Livewire allows members to find a balance in their lives despite disruptions such as time in hospital or time away from school by encouraging social connection, friendship and community.
The research shows that Livewire has been a driving force for building young peoples' capacity to:
- Adapt to adverse life circumstances
- Overcome anxiety and stress
- Accept their illness or disability
- Engage and form meaningful relationships with others
- Feel a strong sense of belonging
- Live full lives
The result is that Livewire helps empower members to make the very most out of life and have fun in the process.
What makes Livewire unique?
Livewire chat
Moderated chat is one of the most popular applications on Livewire. Chat has given members the ability to openly and safely communicate with other people their age in a supportive and nurtured environment.
Livewire chat hosting
Livewire chat hosts take on an integrated role in the community, unique from how moderators interact in other online chat spaces. Livewire chat hosts are active participants, moderators and mentors in the community 7 days a week to provide a friendly, social and accepting environment for members. Chat hosts welcome members, encourage them to form friendships and foster a sense of belonging which is fundamental to supporting the wellbeing of members.
Embodiment and identity
In the context of Livewire, embodiment and identity takes on another, more complex form. In other online social networks individuals may opt to step outside of their physical body to construct an ideal or imaginary identity not tied to their material or physical existence. However in Livewire, members openly share their thoughts and feelings. For the Livewire members, in the unique chat environment Livewire provides, their illness and disability is 'present' but not 'focal' or defining, engendering a sense of normalcy and allowing for a more full-bodied representation of their 'self' to other members.
Online friendships
Genuine friendships are formed in Livewire through online chat, blogging, and online gaming. The research found that many Livewire members felt that their online friendships were stronger than their offline friendships. The facilities in Livewire offer more personalized interaction between members, which enhances self-esteem and builds resilience. The basis of these relationships revolves around empathy and a strong sense of understanding between people who are experiencing similar situations.
Online safety and moderation
Safety is paramount in Livewire’s online community. To ensure safety, Livewire members undergo a strict signup and identity checking process. Furthermore, chat, community forums and other content is moderated 7 days a week. This is unique to Livewire and is a key differentiator from other online social networking sites.
